Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food along the digestive tract. Starting from the esophagus to the stomach, and then from the stomach to the small intestine. Food is then finally moved to the large intestine.
All the food nutrients and water we need are absorbed along the intestines (small and large). A balanced digestive system is important for getting the cells of your body the food and water it needs and to also get rid of waste.
Keys to Maintaining Good Digestive Health
- Walk: Exercise gets the intestines moving and helps you maintain regularity
- Drink water: Particularly if you suffer from constipation
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Vegetables, fruit, proteins, carbohydrates. Choose some foods high in fiber, such as beans and whole wheat breads. Limit sugary and fatty foods.
- Try dried fruits such as prunes or dates (one a day). It’s easy, low calorie and it works.
- Address any food sensitivities or allergies:
- Could you be gluten intolerant?
- What about lactose intolerant?
- If you have bloating, gas, abdominal pain after eating, or diarrhea, you should learn more about food sensitivities and seek assistance in partnership with a healthcare professional. A gastroenterologist (a physician who specializes in the gastrointestinal tract) can help.
